Framing the Beauty of Guilin.
GW Hotel.
Location : Guilin, China
Area : 10.4 Ha
Year : 2018
Scope : Landscape Concept Design & Schematic Design
GW Hotel Resort is envisioned as a pioneering wetland retreat that seamlessly integrates sustainable luxury with the unique ecological character of Guilin. Set within a sensitive natural environment, the development embraces an environmentally responsive approach that preserves and enhances the site's wetlands, waterways, and surrounding landscapes. The masterplan establishes a harmonious relationship between architecture and nature, creating a destination that celebrates the region’s extraordinary environmental assets while setting a benchmark for sustainable resort development.
The resort features 99 private villas complemented by a convention center, spa, wedding venue, restaurants, bar, tea house, and grand arrival lobby. A network of landscape spaces, waterfront promenades, and garden pathways connects these amenities, creating a cohesive and immersive environment that balances privacy, recreation, and social interaction while maximizing access to the surrounding scenery.
The landscape masterplan is guided by five fundamental design principles—In Tune with Nature, Scenery Axis, Common Area Access, A New Lakeside Resort, and Character of Place. These principles shape the spatial organization, circulation systems, land-use distribution, and guest experience throughout the resort. Positioned between Guilin’s iconic karst mountains and the Li-Jiang River, the design carefully frames key views and strengthens connections between the resort and its remarkable natural surroundings.
Central to the design vision is the creation of a healing landscape and a tranquil escape from urban life. Inspired by the concept of “Framing the Beauty of Guilin,” the landscape planning weaves together nature, culture, and hospitality to create restorative experiences throughout the resort. Through the integration of native planting, wetland ecosystems, and carefully curated outdoor spaces, the project offers guests an authentic connection to the beauty and spirit of Guilin.
Masterplan
The masterplan strategy is centered on creating a nature-integrated resort that maximizes the site's unique waterfront setting while preserving its ecological character. Development is organized around a network of lakes, canals, and peninsulas, ensuring strong visual and physical connections to the water from all key destinations. Accommodation clusters, hospitality facilities, and recreational amenities are linked through a hierarchy of roads, promenades, and bridges, while extensive woodland and open green spaces are retained as the landscape framework. The result is a cohesive resort environment where water, nature, and architecture are seamlessly integrated to provide privacy, relaxation, and continuous scenic experiences.
