Commissioned for Union Camerounaise de Brasseries' landmark new production facility in the Moungo department of Cameroon's Littoral Region, this landscape project responds to the ambition of one of Central Africa's largest brewery expansions.
The landscape strategy balances industrial performance with ecological responsibility. Working in Douala's equatorial humid climate, the design prioritises species with proven Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI) credentials, erosion resilience, and deep-rooted stability suited to a site subject to intensive operational activity.
A planting palette was developed from the ground up, using native and locally available alternatives. Key species include Khaya senegalensis (African Mahogany, native to Cameroon and confirmed high-APTI in West African research), Albizia lebbeck (the highest-APTI performer in Nigerian humid tropics studies), and Terminalia catappa for dust capture and shade. Native additions — Milicia excelsa (Iroko), Elaeis guineensis (African Oil Palm), Costus afer (Spiral Ginger), and Asystasia gangetica — reinforce the project's commitment to regional biodiversity alongside operationally appropriate planting.
Five distinct planting zones structure the site: a formal entry and visitor approach; production and operational areas requiring pollution-tolerant canopy; a perimeter security and screening zone; slope and drainage stabilisation areas critical given the region's intense rainfall; and staff recreation spaces. Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanoides) anchors all drainage channels and embankments.
The project represents a model for ecologically informed industrial landscape design in West and Central Africa. Demonstrating that the region's native flora, properly specified, offers both the robustness and the aesthetic quality that major infrastructure projects demand.
